DePuy Metal Hip Replacement Lawsuits:

DePuy Orthopedics, Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson, voluntarily recalled its ASR XL Acetabular Hip System in August 2010. The ASR Hip consists of a metal on metal ball (femoral head) and cup (acetabulum) system implanted into the patient during a total hip replacement.

The recall was based on reports of pain and swelling as well as problems walking after implantation of the device. These symptoms usually develop over time due to dislocation or loosening of the parts, or fracture of the bone to which the device is attached. In addition to the physical discomfort and problems with mobility experienced as a result of the defective product, the rubbing effect of the metal on metal components has resulted in elevated levels of chromium and cobalt in many patients. Elevated cobalt and/or chromium levels in the blood can cause a variety of health issues, including neurologic and cardiac problems, as well as liver and kidney damage.

Considering a DePuy / ASR Hip Replacement Lawsuit?

Through use of multidistrict litigation (MDL), a process in which cases involving common issues or questions of fact are centralized for management by one court, protocols (guidelines) have been established for the preservation, storage and testing of any ASR device removed from a patient. Attorneys for plaintiffs in this MDL have also coordinated a simple and convenient process for testing of chromium and cobalt levels in patients who have received a metal on metal implants.

Although DePuy has not recalled its Pinnacle Hip System, patients have experienced similar symptoms and the Judicial Panel on MultiDistrict Litigation has approved MDL status to centralize actions filed against DePuy and other defendants related to the Pinnacle Hip.
